This gene encodes one of the chains for type I collagen, the fibrillar collagen found in most connective tissues. Mutations in this gene are associated with osteogenesis imperfecta, Ehlers~Danlos syndrome, idiopathic osteoporosis, and atypical Marfan syndrome.
